Matchbox Twenty is one of the bands in the ’90s that had a big influence in my music. On this post we will try and learn how to play the intro guitar riff of their song “Unwell” from their 3rd studio album, More Than You Think You Are.
How to Play Unwell By Matchbox Twenty
If you searched on the chords for this song, you would see its C, D, G and Em for the verses and Bm, C (on the third fret barred), G and D on the pre-chorus and C D G Em C D Em on the chorus and so on, when in fact these are relative to the capo on the second fret. So the song actually begins with a D major and so on.
Check out the intro tab on the image on the left. This is a little different in what we usually put here since the tab only has 4 lines or strings. That is because this is transcribed for a banjo or mandolin or whatever was used in the song :)
For a more experienced guitar player, this is an easy song to play.
What’s the fingering and how do we actually play this song? It’s fairly basic really. If you’re a beginner guitar player, the two string combination plucking or fingerpicking the strings maybe easy for you to play.

The Intro tab of Unwell is presented below. Take note though that this is with reference to the capo on the second fret.
