Let’s do some more Led Zeppelin riffs! On this post we’ll learn how to play “Whole Lotta Love“. The video above (once I publish it) (will) show that the intro riff is the same as the verse riff.
More of that later.
This is a relatively easy riff to play. The tablature below just repeats, over and over again. But something doesn’t have to be complicated to be great, and this riff is an absolute classic.
The problem with tablature sometimes, as opposed to conventional sheet music that is a lot harder to read, is that it doesn’t really give you an exact picture of the phrasing/the rhythm of a piece of music. So you have to listen to the song.
But come on!!! Everybody who loves rock knows this riff.
The only technical note here regards the right hand: play all down –strokes.
Usually, the band releases a complete album but this one was released as a single.
This was Led Zeppelin’s first US single, and their only US Top-10 hit. Some of their most popular songs, like “Stairway To Heaven,” were not released as singles.
This is a very fun song to to.. Why? Because it is easy! Let’s get into it!
How to Play Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin
You may refer to the image above or the video on this page for more details of the guitar riff that we are going to learn today.
Here’s how we play the intro. Remember though that learning the intro is also the same as the shorter version of the riff in the song content.
These are 1/16 notes so it may be quite faster for a beginner.
Starts off with the slide to the 7th fret on the E string. Does not matter from where the slide will come from. This will then followed by the D note (either the open D or the 5th fret on the A string). In the image below you can see that both strings are in play for the D note.
Play that twice before going to the next bar which is the E note on the 7th fret on the A string and the 9th fret on the D string. That note is partnered by 3 open E note and is palm muted.
That’s basically it for the guitar intro riff of Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin.
