This song is on the Rubber Soul Album together with In My Life (my favorite Lennon song) and other great tracks. Actually for me personally, I think Rubber Soul is their best album (and Revolver is like part 2 of Rubber Soul).
Some other great songs on that album are Norwegian Wood (where George introduces the Indian stringed instrument Sitar), Wait, Run For Your Life (which is a little controversial in some States and was even banned in radio plays). Also in the album is Think for Yourself, You Wont See Me, Girl (one of John’s classic as well), Michelle (Paul’s classic) and others. I suggest you get a copy of Rubber Soul.
How to Play Drive My Car Riff
On this post, we will learn how to play the intro, verse and solo riffs of the song.
Below are the tablature of the song that includes the intro, verse and solo. I suggest you watch the video to really learn and appreciate how to play this amazing Bealtes song.
How to play “Drive My Car”
Intro
Below image is the intro part. The notes are from the D7 scale. So if you know those notes, you’ll know that where all these notes will fall on.
(Refer to the image the whole time when reading the explation below)…
The first bar is the regular 4-4 measure and the second one is a 9-8. If you’re like me who knows ziltch in music terminologies, I suggest you Listen to the song to get the proper timings.
First note is the 7th position/fret of the 4string (the D string), that is the A note. This will be followed by the ‘7’ in the D7 chord, which is the “C” note. You play the 5th fret of the 3rd string for that.
You then slide from the 8th fret to the 7th on the same string and then pluck the 5th string (C) and back to the 7th fret of the 4th string. That is the note we started from.
We then do a quarter bend on the 2nd string, 6th fret followed by the first double stop string on the 5th fret for 1st and 2nd string. The second part of the intro will be the alternating between the 5th position and the 7th position.
That’s all there is to it. The next part is for you to check out the video to make all the explanation above to make sense. *grin*
Verse Riffs
The verse riff is played over the D5-G5 chords. Notes are pentatonic and repetitive. It should be easy to learn and memorize.
The image shows only one pluck on the D note (5th fret on the 5th string) but you can actually play it twice. Instead of a quarter note, you can do two eights. Then proceed with the slide from 7 to 9th fret of the A string as shown below.
How to Play the Solo
This is also repetitive. I’ve shown all three here but basically if you can learn to play 1st part or the 1 part, you know it all. The part of the solo where George played a ‘slide’ is not included, but we’ll discuss that part separately.
The start of the slide is in the 5th fret of the 1st string to slide on the 8th fret then from 8th to 10th and 10th to 13th fret.
Then we go back to the 8th fret to slide on the 10th fret of the E string.
